AMSOIL and Warranties
The Magnuson-Moss Act is a U. S. federal law which states that a manufacturer may not require the use of a specific brand of aftermarket product, including lubricants, unless that part is provided by the manufacturer free of charge. (emphasis added).
Misleading OEM Practices
OEM's often suggest in owner's manuals, advertisements or through dealership personnel that motorists and enthusiasts must use the OEM-branded oil to comply with the new vehicle or equipment warranty. Some OEMs include warnings of catastrophic engine failure should a non-OEM oil be used. These tactics are especially pervasive in the powersports market and are calculated to create uncertainly and fear in the consuming public to the point that many consumers feel they are at risk when using anything but OEM-branded lubricants. Generally, the public is unaware that it is illegal for a vehicle manufacturer to tie the warranty of its product to the use of the manufacturer's own lubricant. Federal law seeks to ensure competition within the marketplace, and that specifically includes guaranteeing continuing warranty coverage outside the use of OEM-branded lubricants. In short, you have the right to use the oil of your choice.
Any lubricant meeting performance specifications, or equivalent, and viscosity may be used.
If personnel at a vehicle dealership claim that a vehicle warranty is void simply by using AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil, obtain this statement in writing and send a copy to AMSOIL INC..AMSOIL will follow-up with the dealership.
AMSOIL is Warranty Secure™
As millions of satisfied AMSOIL customers know, using AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants or practicing extended drain intervals does not void new vehicle or equipment warranties, even though some OEM's have attempted to revive old fears about warranty coverage in an attempt to increase sales of their own, typically-more-expensive, OEM-branded oils. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal for companies to void warranties or deny coverage under the warranty simply because an aftermarket or recycled part was used. The manufacturer or dealer must show that the aftermarket or recycled part caused the need for repairs before denying the warranty claim. (http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt192.shtm) (emphasis added).
AMSOIL has always offered protection to its customers through the AMSOIL Limited Warranty. Customers following AMSOIL recommendations are protected by the AMSOIL Limited Warranty if they experience a failure caused by an AMSOIL product. As long as customers maintain their vehicles properly and follow either the vehicle manufacturer recommendations or AMSOIL recommendations, their vehicles and equipment are warranted against failure by either the vehicle manufacturer or AMSOIL INC.. In the unlikely event of an AMSOIL lubrication-related issue, the AMSOIL Limited Warranty covers the cost to repair or replace the damaged components.
Feel Secure Using AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants
The Warranty Secure symbol is designed to reassure consumers that simply using AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants in place of original equipment manufacturer (OEM)-branded lubricants, or practicing extended drain intervals when using AMSOIL lubricants, does not void new vehicle or equipment manufacturer warranties. Simply put, if the lubricant did not cause the problem, the OEM warranty cannot be voided, period.

The Functions of a Lubricant
Modern motor oil is a highly specialized product carefully developed by engineers and chemists to perform many essential functions. A motor oil must:
- Permit easy starting
- Lubricate engine parts and prevent wear
- Reduce friction
- Protect against corrosion
- Keep engine parts clean
- Minimize combustion chamber deposits
- Cool engine parts (heat transfer properties)
- Seal combustion pressures
- Resist foaming (air bubbles do not lubricate and cause wear)
- Aid fuel economy
Motor oil quality has changed dramatically in the past 30 years, and new demands on lubricants in modern engine designs call for oils that meet stringent requirements. Think about the challenges, for example, of air cooling an engine that is covered up with aerodynamic shrouding and more emissions systems, which require hotter operating temperatures. Variations in an oil's ability to meet the requirements determine which service classification rating and viscosity grade it receives. Quality of the motor oil determines how well it performs these functions, and determines its service life.
A motor oil is made up of two basic parts: base fluid and additive packages. A motor oil consists of about 3/4 base stock, and 1/4 additive packages. The quality of both determine the performance characteristics of a motor oil. Some are formulated to meet the lowest threshold set forth by the API (U.S. specifications) and ACEA (European specifications), primarily for cost-cutting reasons. AMSOIL is formulated and designed to far exceed requirements, and to outperform any other motor oil. Most companies formulate and design to "cost;" AMSOIL formulates to "quality." Other companies look for ways to minimize costs and still meet the minimum standard, while AMSOIL's philosophy is to provide the best product, without considering cost as a factor. You get what you pay for.

Reasons for Motor Oil Consumption
AMSOIL Inc. issued Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) MO-2004-04-03 several years ago outlining reasons for motor oil consumption. Forty reasons are listed, two of which are oil-related, and the balance of issues are mechanical in nature. (The two oil-related reasons are "dirty oil" and overfilling the crankcase).
It should be noted that a degree of consumption should be anticipated in all engines. What is considered normal or acceptable, however, will vary from one engine or application to the next. Some OEM's (original equipment manufacturers) will not entertain oil consumption complaints from customers unless consumption is greater than one quart in 800 miles! Other engines will not consume a quart of oil in 10,000 miles. Over-the-Road trucking operations are not concerned until consumption reaches one gallon of oil per 10,000 miles of operation.
All things being equal, engines using AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils will consume less oil because of AMSOIL's lower volatility and tighter seal within the engine. When one engine consumes less oil than another engine, and the quality of the oil is the same, the only variable is the engine itself.
Some engines do use "too much oil." And there are just about as many opinions as to why this occurs as there are vehicle owners. However, there are scientific, technical reasons for this phenomenon. This TSB provides insight as to the many causes of oil consumption in engines.

AMSOIL products were promoting environmental sustainability long before it became fashionable. Today, AMSOIL's environmental management system extends well beyond the products and has been registered to the ISO 14001:2004 standard.
In 1972, AMSOIL produced the first synthetic motor oil recommended for 25,000-mile/one-year drain intervals. It struck a blow against the wasteful practice of changing oil every 3,000 miles/three months. Today, many lubricant manufacturers have followed the AMSOIL lead and introduced extended-drain motor oils of their own, while original equipment manufacturers (OEM's) now recommend drain intervals of up to 15,000 miles, and longer if using electronic oil life monitoring systems. AMSOIL innovation has prevented millions of gallons of waste oil from entering the supply stream. In addition, AMSOIL synthetic lubricants reduce air pollution from exhaust emissions due to lower volatility, while industry testing confirms AMSOIL synthetic lubricants and fuel additives increase fuel economy (saves gas and fuel!).
The AMSOIL environmental philosophy goes deeper than its products and includes its management process and facilities. AMSOIL is now registered to the environmental standard known as ISO 14001:2004. A third-party registration body (NSF) has recognized AMSOIL for its commitment to sustainability throughout all aspects of its business.
AMSOIL products are packaged in recycled cardboard, which provides significant environmental savings. Here are the estimated annual environmental savings based on the average recycled content of corrugated containers supplied to AMSOIL:
- 1,340 tons of wood not consumed
- 6,952 trees preserved
- 3,677 BTU's of energy not consumed
- 1,181,863 lbs. of CO2 equivalent no emitted
- 4,602 lbs. of air pollutants not generated
- 4,995 lbs. of water pollutants not generated
- 3,707,523 gallons of wastewater not generated
- 2,862,426 gallons of water not consumed
- 532,406 lbs. solid waster not generated
- 1,349 cubic yards of landfill space saved
AMSOIL recycling efforts generate more income than waste disposal costs. In fact, the entire 400,000 square foot AMSOIL Center in Superior, WI, produces only one dumpster load of waste every six weeks!
Installing AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil in every passenger car/light truck in America and practicing 25,000-mile/1-year drain intervals would eliminate 35.7 billion quarts of oil.

The Petroleum Quality Institute of America (PQIA) has recently issued a number of consumer warnings regarding low-cost lubricants on the market that could damage engines and transmissions. PQIA issued an alert in January for Super XXX and Liberty Gold Plus SMO motor oils; an alert in December for Super Star, Royal Star, City Star and Royal lubricants; and an alert in November for City Star and Everclear automatic transmission fluids. Among the problems cited with the lubricants are very low viscosities, lack of additives and high silicon levels.
AMSOIL has earned a reputation in the industry for manufacturing to more rigorous standards than other lubricant companies. The process begins by selecting raw materials based on quality and performance, not price. AMSOIL quarantines and tests all incoming raw material to ensure it meets the company's strict performance standards before accepting it for use. Every product AMSOIL manufactures is tested every time it is blended to ensure maximum quality and consistency. This ensures AMSOIL users receive the same high performance every time they purchase AMSOIL synthetic lubricants.

Click here to check out the latest technical study and comparison of AMSOIL INTERCEPTOR® Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil and XPS-2 Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil and their ability to protect against engine wear and deposits.
Direct fuel injection (DFI), sophisticated computer programming, targeted electronic oil injection and other developments have enabled a new era in two-stroke powersports engine design. Modern engines offer an unprecedented combination of increased power, improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
The increased level of performance comes at a price: Modern engines encounter increased heat, friction and stress while often using less oil to lubricate and protect vital engine parts. The Rotax® E-TEC® 800R, for example, is a liquid-cooled, DFI two-stroke engine capable of 7,900 rpm and 163.9 hp. It incorporates electronic equipment that can adjust the amount of oil the engine uses depending on operating conditions. As a result, the engine products fewer exhaust emissions, but undergoes increased severity. Durable oils formulated to provide increased lubricity are best suited for powersports engines like the Rotax® E-TEC® 800R.
This detailed and documented study compares the ability of AMSOIL INTERCEPTOR® Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil and XPS-2 Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil to protect against engine wear and deposits in a snowmobile equipped with a Rotax® E-TEC® 800R engine. The study further compares the lubricity and detergency properties of each oil using industry-standard American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) testing, demonstrating that INTERCEPTOR® exceeds the performance requirements of high-performance DFI snowmobile engines in severe operating conditions.
Not only does AMSOIL provide performance, protection and peace of mind, AMSOIL delivers it all for less than the OEMs do.

Most mobile and stationary hydraulic applications do not require the extreme temperature performance properties provided by AMSOIL Synthetic AW Series Hydraulic Oils, and the new HV Series Synthetic Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oils now provide a more cost-effective, high performance alternative to conventional hydraulic oils.
AMSOIL Synthetic HV Series Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oils are engineered to outperform any oil found in the general hydraulics market. They have very high viscosity indices that far exceed conventional oils. They provide all-season capability and are designed to significantly reduce varnish formation for longer trouble-free operation.
- AMSOIL Synthetic HV Series Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oils provide three major benefits:
All Season Capability - HV Oils are multi-viscosity products that can eliminate the need to change to lighter viscosity grades in cooler weather.
Varnish Protection - HV Oils are designed to prevent varnish better than any currently available hydraulic oil. Preventing varnish buildup will lead to less downtime and maintenance costs.
Efficiency - Because of their high viscosity indices, HV Oils will resist viscosity changes due to heating and cooling better than conventional oils. The operator will experience less sluggish operation and save fuel when the engine doesn't have to work as hard to overcome excessive internal pump leakage caused by too thin of an oil or excessive friction caused by too thick of an oil.
AMSOIL Synthetic HV Series Multi-Viscosity Hydraulic Oils are available in four viscosities: ISO 22, ISO 32, ISO 46, and ISO 68.
